According to News18, drugmaker Abbott India is recalling several batches of penicillin G-based antibiotics after receiving some complaints about test strips swelling.
The US drugmaker is voluntarily recalling batches and asking pharmacies and retailers to stop selling Pentids 800, Pentids 400 and Pentids 200 tablets manufactured by newly launched contract manufacturing company Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Pentids are mainly used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, throat, lungs, nose, skin and sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis.
“Isolated complaints have been reported related to the puffed strips in Pentids 800, 400 and 200 tablets,” Abbott India told its retailers, stockists and pharmacies in a letter reviewed by News18. “While we are investigating this issue with the manufacturer, out of an abundance of caution, we have initiated a voluntary Level 2 recall.”
An Abbott spokesperson told News18 in an email reply: “Out of an abundance of caution, Abbott India is voluntarily recalling Pentids tablets, one of our antibiotic medicines, based on some reports of tablet puffing (excessive air in the pocket tablets). ) ) in some batches.
“While we are still investigating the issue with the third-party manufacturer, we are working with distributors and other partners to facilitate this recall,” the spokesperson added.
It clarified: “There have been no complaints reported regarding health issues. This issue does not affect any other existing Abbott products and alternatives”.
The company has asked its partners to verify the batch of inventory with relevant stockists and retailers within the shelf life, and take necessary measures to recall the above-mentioned inventory from relevant stockists and retailers. Dealers have been ordered to return all batches of inventory for evaluation.
