Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP of conspiring to rape and murder a trainee doctor in Kolkata and announced plans to sentence the rapist to death within seven days of the crime.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said her government (Trinamool Congress) will pass an anti-rape law bill that will allow death penalty for the accused.
The Chief Minister made this statement in the backdrop of the August 9 incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Mamata Banerjee said: “We will pass an anti-rape bill to ensure that rapists are sentenced to death within seven days of the crime.”
Addressing a rally in the city, Mamata, who shared the stage with her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of conspiracy in the Kolkata doctor's death and said The party is trying to defame West Bengal.
“BJP is trying to defame Bengal and conduct dirty politics over the death of the intern doctor,” she alleged.
Referring to the 12-hour Bengal Bandh call issued by the BJP on Wednesday, the chief minister said the saffron party was carrying out acts of sabotage and its workers were attacking police.
“The Trinamool Congress does not believe in bandh politics and the BJP is deliberately calling for it,” she said.
“Have the chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan resigned over crimes against women in their states?” she asked.
Mamata also praised the efforts of the state police in maintaining law and order during the “Nabanna Abhijan” on August 27 and the “Bangla Bandh” on August 28 and said, “I commend the Bengal police for showing restraint. pay tribute.
