Kolkata rape and murder case live updates: Mass violence during students' 'Nabanna Abhijan' march in Kolkata and neighboring Howrah on Tuesday afternoon marred calls for justice for RG Kar Hospital victims, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemning police action against protesters, and called for a 12-hour Bengali band performance on Wednesday.
Protesters aimed to reach Nabanna, the West Bengal secretariat, on Tuesday and clashed violently with police at multiple stopping points. The violence lasted for nearly four hours and resulted in injuries to many people on both sides, including senior police officers and female protesters. Police said more than 200 people were arrested across the state.
Protesters threw rocks and glass bottles at police at several locations, causing their progress to be blocked. Police said 15 Kolkata policemen and 14 state policemen were injured in the clashes.
Police resorted to massive charges, firing water cannons and throwing tear gas to disperse the militant crowds that poured in from various gathering points in Nabana.
The call for 'Nabanna Abhijan' was made by the unregistered students' group 'Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj' and the dissident state government employee platform 'Sangrami Joutha Mancha', which demanded that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee be charged with rape Resigned for murder of a medical officer at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
