Kolkata Police has strongly refuted claims circulating on social media that the sheet used to cover the body of a trainee doctor was changed during the investigation
Amid the ongoing debate over the color of the sheet used to cover the body of a trainee doctor, Kolkata Police on Thursday strongly objected to the claim and said the allegation that the sheet was changed during the investigation was completely “baseless”.
The controversy gained attention after some reports and news channels claimed that the color of the sheets covering the 31-year-old doctor's body mysteriously changed from blue to green.
Responding to the ongoing reports, Indira Mukherjee, Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police Central Division, said, “Today, we are seeing few video clips going viral on social media and some TV channels, including : There is discussion that the curtain sheets used to cover the body may be a different color than the previously stated blue.
“Our photo and video session begins around 12:25 p.m. On that day, photography and videography were carried out in stages, not only during the seizure, but also during the interrogation and when the forensic team arrived. During this time, we can find no records. I can say unequivocally that the color of the sheet used to cover the body was blue,” she added.
The deputy commissioner further said that the claims circulating on social media were not true and the data had been officially handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
What's the controversy surrounding bed sheets?
According to reports, parents of junior doctors and trainee doctors at RG Kar Medical College allegedly gave conflicting accounts, mentioning that the bedsheets were of different colours. Junior doctors said the body was covered with blue sheets, while the victim's parents claimed they saw green sheets when they saw their daughter's body hours later.
Notably, the victim's father, in an interview with a TV channel, accused the police and hospital authorities of tampering with evidence, claiming that the position of his daughter's body and the color of the sheets were changed.
The gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor was handed over to India's Central Bureau of Investigation after Kolkata police allegedly tampered with evidence and failed to investigate the case effectively.
The doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9 while she was resting from her night shift. The case has been handed over to the CBI from the Kolkata Police on an order of the Calcutta High Court.
