The police department is likely to take Debashish Chakraborty to Hyderabad as doctors told them there might be something wrong with his eyesight.
Debash was hit in the eye when a protester threw a brick at the police car he was riding in as it drove towards the Strand Road via Kingsway (Eden Gardens).
On Tuesday, August 27, police officer Debasish Chakraborty, working in the East Zone Cyber Cell of the West Bengal Police, and his wife Debarati planned to celebrate their son's fifth birthday. However, he was hit in the eye during the 'Nabanna Abhijan' protest march at Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj on the same day.
Debash, along with others, deployed with the doubles team on a mission at Furlong Gate 11. They were redeployed and as they headed towards Strand Road via Kingsway (Eden Gardens) some protesters, including male and female students, threw bricks at their vehicle. One of the bricks hit Debash directly in the eye. He suffered severe trauma to his left eye and is undergoing treatment at Shankar Nethralaya.
Debasish called his wife, Debarati, to tell her he was being taken to the hospital. Debharati rushed to the hospital and saw that her husband's eyes were injured.
The police department is likely to take him to Hyderabad as doctors told them there might be something wrong with his eyesight.
Speaking to News18, his wife Debarati Chakraborty said: “I don't know what happened. He is very level-headed. His eyes are severely damaged. The department plans to take him away to Hyderabad. They are always fighting in their adventures for the sake of duty.
“A lot of people say a lot of things about the police, but our husbands are willing to risk their jobs. We are not from another planet. Police officers have families and children. We are human beings. A lot of people blame the police. Now my husband is seriously injured. I Who is to blame? I know it's his job, but what if he has permanent vision problems?
She also told News18 she believed he would recover soon and hoped he would regain his sight and be on the road again to carry out his duties.
Debash's five-year-old son kept thinking that his father had gone to work and would be back soon. Debarati, a young woman in her thirties, has been in the hospital trying to make sure her husband's vision remains safe. The state government and police department have been helping her in various ways, but she looked nervous and kept praying for his well-being.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police has filed a case against the protester in connection with Debashi's injury. The Kolkata Police Commissioner also met Debashi at the hospital. Sources say the entire police department is concerned for his safety.
At least 25 police officers and some protesters were injured.
The police community is also shocked by Debashish Chakraborty's condition. Aloke Sanyal Police Station shared on Facebook that Debasish was his colleague. He called for justice for Debash.
