Lucknow doctor who was cheated out of Rs 48 lakh after two suspicious calls believes he is under investigation by authorities
Scammers are coming up with all kinds of innovative ways to deceive the gullible. While people are now aware of OTP scams and becoming more cautious, these scammers are proving themselves to be ahead of the curve.
The recent case of a doctor in Lucknow who was defrauded of Rs 48 lakh shows that these online thugs can even impersonate law enforcement agencies.
A doctor living in Lucknow's Aliganj area finally realized that he had been cheated and lodged an FIR.
On August 20, a scammer pretended to be a FedEx Express employee in Mumbai and called general practitioner Dr Ashok Solanki. He said a package named Dr Solanki was sent to Iran containing fake passports, laptops, pen drives and drugs. Dr. Solanki got tensed hearing this.
After a while, another goon pretended to be a Mumbai crime branch official and called the doctor through Skype. He claimed to be the deputy commissioner of police of Mumbai and informed that transactions worth crores of rupees had been carried out through the doctor's account. He further revealed that he is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate.
He further suggested that he should transfer all remaining funds in his account to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) account list. He said his money would be returned after an investigation. Dr. Solanki followed the advice and transferred all funds from his account to the said “RBI” account, which was actually the scammer's account.
After that, neither of them called again, and the doctor did not refund the money. It was only then that Dr Solanki realized he had been cheated and reported the matter to the police.
Dr Solanki said in his flight report that his clinic is located in Vikas Nagar. As he was on his way home from the clinic, he got the call.
