This village in Uttar Pradesh is famous for its kitchen gardens, and despite being classified as a “backward” village, it still thrives thanks to women's clever recycling of kitchen water to grow vegetables in their yards

People living in Sikandarpur village in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh have set a unique example by saving every drop of water. Villagers use water from the kitchen to grow vegetables in their yards. This makes this village a source of inspiration for other villages in the region and state.

If someone wants to go to this village, they may ask others “Where is the village with vegetable gardens?” Although people may not know the name of the village, if someone asks about the villages with vegetable gardens or the villages where vegetables are grown in the yard, they will immediately know the name of the village. You will know which village you are referring to.

The women saved every drop of water and created a vegetable garden in their yard, which was praised by district leaders.

Although Sikandarpur village is among the backward villages, the women here have changed its destiny. This village, located in Parikshitgarh block, about 50 kilometers from Meerut, has won praise from everyone for its commendable work in saving water.

Women here rarely buy vegetables from outside because most of them are grown in their own yards. There are hundreds of houses in this village, and everyone presents the same scene. Vegetables such as cabbage, lady's fingers, peppers, gourds, eggplants, papayas, coriander, and jackfruit are grown in each courtyard.

What stands out is that these vegetables are grown using greywater or wastewater. In this village, there is no place to collect household water on the streets. This is because the water used in the kitchen does not flow out of the house.

The village has also won the favor of Meerut's Parikshitgarh block officials. ADO said that such villages undoubtedly set an example for the entire society.

In Sikandarpur village, drains are almost non-existent. This is because not even a drop of water can escape outside the house. Women grow vegetables at home and set an example of self-reliance.
