    JPC invites public to submit suggestions on waqf amendment bill within next 15 days

    Any individual or organization can submit suggestions regarding the Religious Endowments (Amendment) Bill to the JPC by mail, fax and email.

    The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed to discuss the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, has invited the public and experts to provide suggestions on the bill.

    At its first meeting on August 22, the Juvenile Information Commission recommended that advertisements should be placed in newspapers to solicit suggestions to allow for wider discussions among all stakeholders related to the bill.

    Accepting the request of MPs, the JPC headed by Jagdambika Pal has sought suggestions on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

    The Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a notice on Friday saying that any individual or organization can submit suggestions on the Religious Endowments (Amendment) Bill to the JPC by mail, fax and email.

    “The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 introduced in the Lok Sabha has been submitted to the Joint Committee of Parliament for review and report. Considering the wider implications of the proposed bill, the committee chaired by Shri Jagdambika Pal decided to invite the public, especially NGOs/experts/ Stakeholders and agencies submit memorandums containing comments/recommendations.

    “Those who wish to submit written memorandums/recommendations to the committee may send two copies in English or Hindi to the Joint Secretary (JM), Lok Sabha Secretariat, Room No. 440, Parliament House Annexe, New Delhi-110001, Telephone: 110001. No.: 23034440/23035284, Fax No.: 23017709 and mail it to jpcwaqf-iss@sansad.nic.in within 15 days from the date of publication of this advertisement. The text of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 has been Uploaded on the Lok Sabha website in Hindi and English.

    “The memoranda/recommendations submitted to the committee will form part of the records of the committee and will be treated as 'confidential' and subject to the privileges of the committee,” the Lok Sabha secretariat said in the advertisement.

    “Those who wish to attend the committee meeting must clearly indicate so in addition to submitting a memorandum. However, the decision of the committee in this regard shall be final.

    In the first meeting on August 22, there was a heated debate between the BJP and Opposition MPs on the purpose of the bill and its provisions. Opposition MPs raised slogans against the bill.

    Meanwhile, the second meeting of the JPC to discuss the waqf bill will be held at the Parliament House Annex on Friday.

    The Juvenile Justice Commission has issued its opinion on the bill. Several Muslim organizations have been invited to express their views. Representatives of the All India Sunni Ulema Mumbai, Indian Muslim Civil Rights Organization New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board and Rajasthan State Muslim Waqf Board will attend the JPC.
