IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told a virtual press conference that the country is expected to receive above-normal rainfall in September, at 109 per cent of the long-term average rainfall of 167.9 mm.

“These areas may experience extremely heavy rainfall, which may lead to flooding. We should remain vigilant for landslides, mudslides and landslides.
“We expect low pressure systems to develop in the Bay of Bengal every week of the month, which will lead to heavy rainfall across the country,” he added.
The monsoon trough is expected to remain in its normal position and several low pressure systems may develop in the Bay of Bengal which may move west-northwest up to Rajasthan. Mohapatra said the trough of low pressure may also move towards the Himalayan foothills and unrest in the western region in September may affect the region.
