A 33-year-old Indian-origin woman admitted on Friday to killing her 10-year-old daughter, who was found dead at her home in a small town in England's West Midlands region earlier this year.
Jaskirat Kaur, also known as Jasmine Kang, was charged with Shay Kang's murder on March 4, when West Midlands Police said the girl was found injured at a property in the town of Rowley Regis and pronounced dead at the scene.
Call, who is now in prison, told Wolverhampton Crown Court via video link at a brief hearing that she pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her daughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Judge Michael Chambers has set sentencing on the charge for October 25, when she is expected to appear in person.
“Your case is likely to be adjourned for sentencing, most likely to October 25. Further reports are required and it is in your interest to co-operate with the preparation of these reports.
Defense lawyer Catherine Goddard told the court there were “no disputes about the facts” of the case and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed Call's guilty plea to manslaughter was acceptable to the prosecution. Earlier, an inquest into Shea's death heard she died from a stab wound to the chest, the Shropshire Star reported.
Brickhouse Primary School, where Shea attended, issued a statement at the time saying it was deeply saddened by the tragic death. “Shay was a bright, happy, funny child who was loved by all and will be sadly missed by everyone,” the statement read.
Tributes including toys, cards and balloons poured in, and some parents of children who attended the same school started an online “Go Fund Me” fundraising campaign to raise money for Shay's funeral.
The fundraiser reads: “As you may know, she has no family other than her mom. The purpose of this is to come together as a community to help raise funds for her funeral and help provide flowers, headstones, etc.
'She doesn't deserve this at all and all we can do is make sure she flies higher in the most beautiful way.' West Midlands Police confirm they will not be looking for Jaskirat Kaur following arrest anyone else as part of the investigation.
“Our thoughts are with Shay's family and friends. Her tragic death has had a profound impact on those who knew her and the wider community,” Detective Inspector Dan Jarrett of West Midlands Police said at the time .
