The shop owner, reportedly furious over the attempted theft, and his accomplices beat the young man before tying him to the bonnet of his car.
In a shocking incident in Godhra, Gujarat, a man accused of stealing from a shop was attacked and driven after being tied to the bonnet of a car, a police officer said on Saturday.
A video of the incident that went viral among netizens shows a man tying the bonnet of a car with a rope before the car was paraded through a market in Kutambura village in Godhrakan.

The incident took place in Kanku Thambla village of Godhra taluka on Thursday when the man, Surjan Bhavri (30), went to a fertilizer shop to buy seeds. According to Bhavri, he took three packets of seeds for 30 rupees but forgot to pay. Shop owner Ganpatsinh Parmar thought he had paid Rs 500 and refunded Rs 470, PTI reported.
However, the shop owner then chased Bhavri and accused him of stealing the seeds because he had not paid for them. Bhavri claimed that he forgot to pay Parma and later handed him a Rs 500 note. Palma and his aides, reportedly outraged by the attempted theft, attacked Bavri before tying him to the hood of their car.
“After the Godhra taluka police came to know about the incident due to these videos, a case of attempted theft was registered against the victim Surjan Bhavri (30). An FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita registered an FIR against Ganpatsinh Parmar and Manubhai Charan Register and accuse them of wrongful confinement, assault, insult, etc.,” the police officer said.

The police are currently investigating the incident and will decide on further action based on the results of the investigation.
The incident sparked debate in society about lynchings and how petty crimes are properly dealt with, as there are increasing incidents across the country of people taking matters into their own hands and resorting to brutal tactics rather than handing offenders to the police.
