Unsuspecting villages were suddenly attacked, causing widespread panic and forcing many residents, including women, children and the elderly, to flee to safer areas.
Suspected militants carried out a gun-bomb attack in Manipur's Imphal West district on Sunday, killing two people, including a woman, and injuring nine others, police said.
According to the police, the militants opened fire indiscriminately from their hilltop positions in Kutluk and the adjacent low-lying valley area of Kadamband, killing two people and injuring nine others. Some houses were also damaged due to heavy shelling by militants, they added.
Hospital officials said that of the nine injured, five suffered gunshot wounds and others were injured by bomb blasts.
Police added that the raid on the unsuspecting village caused widespread panic and forced many residents, including women, children and the elderly, to flee to safer areas.
The body of the deceased, identified as 31-year-old Ngangbam Surbala Devi, has been sent to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for autopsy. Police said the other victim has not yet been identified.
Security forces, including state and central units, have been deployed in the area to stabilize the situation.
The state government strongly condemned the attack on the defenseless villagers of Kutluk.
“The state government is aware of the unfortunate incident of Kuki militants using drones, bombs and sophisticated weapons to attack unarmed Kutluk villagers, resulting in the death of two persons, including a woman. The state government is making every effort to bring peace to the state Come for normalcy and peace and therefore take this act of terrorizing defenseless villagers very seriously.
This act of creating havoc among defenseless villagers is seen as an attempt to undermine the efforts of the state government to establish peace in the state, it added.
“The state government has taken immediate action to control the situation and punish those involved in the attack at Kutruk village in Imphal West,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the DGP has directed all SPs to maintain high alert in all fringe areas.
