The police found the decapitated body of a woman with her hands and feet chopped off on the banks of the Muta River.
A couple has been arrested on suspicion of killing a woman whose headless body was found on a river bank in Pune city earlier this week, police said on Sunday.
Police arrested Ashfaq Khan and his wife Hamida on Saturday for allegedly killing his 48-year-old sister during a dispute over the ownership of a slum room, an official said.
On August 26, the police discovered the decapitated body of a woman with her hands and feet chopped off on the banks of the Muta River in the Kaladi region.
After investigation, the woman was identified as Sakina Khan (48), the official said.
Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjankumar Sharma said: “The Pune city police found the torso of a woman on the banks of the Mutta river. The body had no clothes on it and the accused dismembered it to destroy evidence and then put it to death It was thrown into the river. Investigation revealed that the victim Sakina had a dispute with her brother over the ownership of a room in a slum in Shivaji Nagar area.
Sakina was reported missing and her brother Ashfaq and sister-in-law Hamida were detained in connection with her disappearance, the official said.
He said the pair allegedly strangled the victim, beheaded her and dismembered the body to destroy evidence.
The couple has been arrested under Sections 103 (murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Code (BNS), the official said.
