Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Monday approved a 309-km new line project to provide the shortest rail link between the two major business hubs of Mumbai and Indore .
The minister said the total cost of the project is expected to be Rs 18,036 crore and will be completed by 2028-29.
The project will create approximately 102 million person-days of direct employment during construction, or what Vaishnaw calls “person-days.”

The scheme is an outcome of Prime Minister Gati Shakti’s National Intermodal Transport Master Plan, which is realized through integrated planning and will provide seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods and services.
“The project is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a new India that will make the people of the region an 'Atmanirbhar' through all-round development of the region, increasing their employment/self-employment opportunities,” the ministry said .

The project, covering six districts in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, will add approximately 309 kilometers to the existing network of Indian Railways.
It will boost tourism in the region by providing shorter routes between the western/southwestern parts of the country and central India. This will increase tourist footfall at various tourist/religious places in Ujjain-Indore region, including Sri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple.
The project will directly connect Pithampur Automobile Cluster (with 90 large units and 700 small and medium industries) from JNPA's gateway port and other state ports.
It will also provide direct connectivity to the millet-producing regions of Madhya Pradesh and the onion-producing regions of Maharashtra and facilitate distribution to the northern and southern regions of the country.
It is an important route for the transportation of bulk commodities such as agricultural products, fertilizers, containers, iron ore, steel, cement, petroleum, petroleum and lubricants (POL), the statement said.
The capacity enhancement work will result in an increase in freight volume of approximately 26 MTPA (million tons per year).
“Rail is an environmentally friendly and energy-saving mode of transport that will help achieve climate goals and minimize the country's logistics costs, reduce oil imports (180 million liters) and reduce CO2 emissions (1.38 billion kilograms), which is equivalent to planting 5.5 Thousands of trees,” it said.
Through this project, 30 new stations will be constructed to enhance connectivity with the desirable Barwani area.
The new line project will provide connectivity to approximately 1,000 villages and a population of approximately 3 million people.
