Ghosh was on his 15th day of interrogation at the institution's Salt Lake City office in connection with the August 9 rape and murder of a postgraduate intern at RG Kar Hospital.
A few days after the recovery of the body, Ghosh, who faced criticism from all sides, announced his resignation as principal of RG Kar and the National Health Service.
Since the bruised body of a junior doctor was found in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on the morning of August 9, former principal Sandip Ghosh, who was in charge of the medical college, has been accused of rape and murder. When informed, the director of the institute became the most controversial figure in the horrific incident.
Ghosh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday for his alleged involvement in a case related to RG Kar's financial irregularities. Political observers believe that Ghosh is not only controversial for his past “mischief” but also for his blatant attempt to cause controversy.
A few days after the recovery of the body, Ghosh, who faced criticism from all sides, announced his resignation as principal of RG Kar and the National Health Service.
However, on the same day, the Ministry of Health did not accept Ghosh's resignation from the National Medical Services Department, but announced through a notification the appointment of Ghosh as the director of the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH). This move attracted criticism from all parties.
The move kicked off a wave of protests against Ghosh and the state government, which was accused of blatantly trying to protect Ghosh.
Ghosh, however, could not take over as principal of CNMCH as division bench of the Calcutta High Court while ordering a CBI probe into the RG Kar incident and barring him from being appointed principal of any medical college in the state until further orders.
Akhtar Ali, former deputy director of RG Kar, moved the Calcutta High Court seeking a central agency probe into the hospital's financial “irregularities” while he was in charge of the state-run hospital, giving Ghosh brought trouble.
In his petition, Ali pointed out how his earlier appeals as a whistleblower to different departments of the state government to highlight financial irregularities were ignored by the administrative machinery.
Meanwhile, protest representatives from the medical community began to raise their voices, claiming that the junior doctor was victimized because she knew too many “bloody secrets” of the RG Kar government under Ghosh.
Finally, acting on Ali's petition, the single judge directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to conduct parallel investigations into the financial irregularities as well as the rape and murder cases.
After being interrogated for 16 consecutive days, the CBI's economic crimes branch finally detained Ghosh on Monday night in connection with the financial irregularities case.
