The accused, named Gautam, was arrested by a police officer patrolling the area when he tried to escape three hours after attacking her.
A 21-year-old man allegedly stabbed his wife to death and left her body in a car in west Delhi's Rajouri Garden area, officials said on Monday.
The accused, named Gautam, was arrested by a police officer patrolling the area when he tried to escape three hours after attacking her, they said.
Hours after the incident, the victim's family protested outside the Delhi Police headquarters, demanding action against the police personnel for their alleged inaction in the case.
A family member of the victim claimed that she was not married to Gautam but would tell people that they were married. He said she had previously filed a sexual assault and abuse case against Gautam but the police showed “lack of courtesy”. Ashotosh Pandey, a lawyer who pursued Maya's previous case against Gautam in court, told PTI that this was the third time Gautam had allegedly assaulted her.
“In March this year, he kidnapped her but the police registered a missing case. Then in May, he brutally attacked her in a park in Paschim Vihar, due to which she had to undergo treatment at AIIMS for at least three days,” Pandey said.
Police said Maya and Gautam were residents of Raghubir Nagar. Police added that Gautam used to run a business but was currently unemployed. According to police, the matter came to attention at 1.20 am when Inspector Ajay of Khayala police station arrested a shirtless and suspicious Gautam.
During questioning, Gautam revealed that he killed his wife and left her body in the car.
Gautam told police that he married her in March without her family's consent, a police officer said, adding that even after marriage, they lived with their respective families and met occasionally.
Gautam drove to meet her somewhere in Titapur in Rajouri Garden area on Sunday evening.
Another police officer said: “Around 11pm she insisted they start living together and the two got into an argument in the car.”
Gautam allegedly stabbed her multiple times. The officer said he parked his car near Shivaji College traffic lights after realizing she was dead. The officer added that a murder case has been registered at the Rajouri Garden police station and the facts stated by the accused are being verified.
