In a shocking incident that has highlighted the ongoing safety issues on the railways, a Greater Chennai police chief has been arrested for allegedly molesting a medical student at Saidapet railway station in Tamil Nadu. Superintendent of Police Kamal Kannan was reportedly involved in the incident on August 25 at around 9pm. Kannan was allegedly drunk when he approached the students who were waiting for their train.
He reportedly began talking to her before molesting her. The students' screams attracted the attention of other passengers, who intervened and handed Kannan over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
The RPF conducted a preliminary investigation and then handed Kannan over to the Government Railway Police (GRP), who subsequently seized the defendant's mobile phone. Despite being instructed to report for further questioning, Kannan failed to show up at the GRP station and has since been missing. A search is ongoing and a special team has been set up to find him. Attempts to locate him at his residence were unsuccessful.
Following the allegations, the Chennai police suspended Kannan. This case further strengthened the supervision of railway safety in the region.
