The corridor will connect rural areas on the Delhi-Haryana border with major cities as buses are the only mode of public transport there.
The expansion project will have 19 stations between Rithala and Narela and two more stations in Haryana at an estimated cost of Rs 6,230.99 crore.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot on Wednesday said the Rithala-Narela corridor of Delhi Metro will be extended to Kundli-Nathupur in Haryana.
He said the Delhi government has largely approved the extension and will send the proposal to the Center to move to the bidding stage.
“The total length of the metro corridor will be 23.73 km, of which 2.72 km will be in Haryana,” Gehlot said at a press conference.
He said the expansion project, which will have 19 stations between Rithala and Narela and two more stations in Haryana, is expected to cost Rs 6,230.99 crore and is expected to be completed in four years.
The minister said the corridor will connect rural areas on the Delhi-Haryana border with major cities as buses are the only mode of public transport there.
Commuters from these areas will now be able to reach central Delhi within an hour and a half, he added.
“This expansion will not only benefit the people of the two villages (Kundli and Nathupur) but also all the people of nearby villages,” Garot said.
The Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor is part of the Delhi Metro Phase-4 project, which includes six corridors: Mukundpur (Parliament Park)-Maujpur, Aerocity-Tughlakabad, Janakpuri West-RK Ashram, Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block, Inderlok – Indraprastha and Rithala-Narela-Nathupur.
The minister further added that under the leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, by expanding the metro network, “we aim to reduce travel time, ease road congestion and promote the use of public transport, which will also help in our ongoing efforts to combat pollute” .
Gehlot also hoped that Kejriwal, who has been in jail since March in connection with the excise policy scam, would be granted bail soon.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the bail plea of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in the matter on Thursday.
