Junior doctors from West Bengal government hospitals have urged everyone to switch off lights and light candles or diyas between 9 pm and 10 pm today in a symbolic 'lights out' protest
As protests continued over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, some people in the state staged a protest on Wednesday night by switching off lights from 9 to 10 pm. Junior doctors at government hospitals in West Bengal urged everyone to switch off lights and light candles or diyas in a symbolic “lights out” protest.
The lights of the Raj Bhawan in West Bengal were also switched off as a symbol of protest against the horrific rape and murder in Kolkata.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose also expressed support for the protest against the rape and murder incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital by switching off the lights at Raj Bhavan and lighting candles.

At Wednesday's protest rally, BJP leaders including Sukanta Majumdar and Agnimitra Paul also joined the people in switching off lights in protest .
In a show of solidarity, doctors at AIIMS in Delhi also held a candle protest on Wednesday.
On August 9, the body of a working postgraduate student was found in the seminar room of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The incident sparked outrage across the country.
A citizen volunteer was arrested shortly after the trainee doctor's body was found. The CBI has also arrested Sandip Ghosh, former dean of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for alleged financial misconduct in the medical institution.
