Police have arrested a man who had just completed eighth grade for posing as a fake police officer to lure more than a dozen female police officers into marriage. The accused also extorted Rs 2 crore from the victim and even married a female police officer.
Bareilly Superintendent of Police Rahul Bhati said they arrested the suspect from the satellite bus stand. Bhatti said the accused, who had completed only eighth grade, had claimed that he was posted in the office of the ADG, Lucknow.
Explaining the modus operandi of the accused, Bhatti said the suspect used to extract information about women police personnel from official police websites to identify his potential targets. He would then deceive them by introducing himself as a police officer, sending photos of himself in police uniform, and lure them into marriage.
According to his statement, accused Rajan Verma, a resident of Lakhimpur Kheri, has confessed to around eight to ten incidents so far. Five cases have been registered against him.
In a case registered at Bareilly police station, Verma was accused of cheating a female police officer of Rs 30 lakh. Additionally, Verma would arrange loans for his targets by obtaining their Aadhaar and PAN cards and contacting a well-known associate in Lucknow.
According to police investigations, a constable of the Special Operations Group of Lakhimpur had earlier duped Verma into getting money in exchange for his job in the police force.
When he failed to join the police force, Verma increased his interactions with the police by living with them and learning their ways. Velma learned how to wear a police uniform, salute and use weapons. He then lied to a female officer about joining the police force and married her. After the wife discovered the truth, the two parted ways. He then started deceiving other female police officers in the same way.
When one of his victims, a female police officer from Bareilly, lodged an FIR against him at the police station, an investigation and search operation was launched.
The female police officer said that Verma took a fraudulent loan to buy a car after taking her documents to apply for a loan for a piece of land. When the money was debited from the victim's account, the fake cop's secret was revealed.
