A 6-year-old boy was allegedly sexually assaulted by his 35-year-old neighbor in southeast Delhi's Govindpuri area, officials said on Wednesday.
They said the matter came to attention on Tuesday when the boy revealed that his neighbor had touched him in an appropriate manner on Sunday.
A case was registered under the POCSO Act and the accused Balram Dass alias Kalu was arrested on Tuesday night.
When the police team took Kalu to the police station, a large crowd gathered and tried to attack the accused and police staff.
However, the police managed to bring the defendant safely back to the police station.
Later, a crowd demanding action against the accused gathered in front of the Govindpuri police station.
Senior officials reached the spot and reassured the people by ensuring strict action against the accused.
Providing details of the case, a police officer said that the boy's family had contacted local police to report that the 6-year-old boy was missing on September 1.
However, the boy's family found him hours later and took him to the police station.
On the same day, the boy underwent a medical examination at AIIMS and was admitted to the Boys Care Home in Lajpat Nagar.
The family had not alleged any sexual assault until Monday, police said in a statement.
The boy's statement was recorded before a magistrate on Tuesday but he did not make any incriminating statements.
However, when he was taken to the child welfare committee, he alleged that the accused touched him inappropriately, it added.
