The Supreme Court on Thursday will hear Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's bail plea and his challenge to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)'s arrest of him in connection with the GST policy scam.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan will resume hearing the case on September 5, according to the list of reasons posted on the Supreme Court's website.
Kejriwal filed two separate petitions in his special leave petition challenging the denial of bail and the CBI's arrest of him in the case on June 26. He also challenged the Delhi High Court's August 5 order upholding his arrest.
On August 23, the Supreme Court allowed the CBI to file its counter-affidavit and gave Kejriwal two days to submit his rebuttal.
Previously, Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with the money laundering case and the trial court had granted him bail on June 20. However, the bail order was later stayed by the Delhi High Court.
Besides, the Supreme Court on July 12 ordered Kejriwal to be granted interim bail in a case filed by the education ministry. However, he remains in custody as he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
On August 5, the Delhi High Court upheld the legality of the chief minister's arrest and stated that the CBI's actions were not malicious. The court noted that the CBI had demonstrated how AAP supremo could have influenced witnesses who had the courage to testify only after their arrest.
The high court directed him to apply for regular bail in the CBI case before the trial court.
Meanwhile, the court on Tuesday accepted the chargesheet filed by the CBI against Kejriwal and other accused in connection with the liquor policy scam. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja issued an appearance order to Kejriwal on September 11 and extended his detention till the same date.
Recently, the Supreme Court granted bail to senior AAP leader and former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, BRS leader K. Kavitha and former AAP communications director Vijay Nair in the GST policy case.
