In 2019, Kamala Harris said at the CNN Climate Conference that the United States should ban plastic straws to combat the climate crisis, while acknowledging that paper straws can be difficult to drink from.
“I think we should, yes,” she said. “I mean, look, let's be honest: It's really hard to drink out of a paper straw, like, if you don't swallow it right away, it starts to bend and then little things grab it. So. , we must improve it a little more.
Camara called for “innovation” in alternatives to plastic.
“Innovation is a process. But you know, let's encourage innovation. I think we can do a little better than those flimsy plastic straws,” she said. “We really need to ban plastic.”
According to a report Thursday from Alex Thompson of Axios, The Kamala Harris campaign said this is “no longer her position.”
“The ban on the use of plastic straws is to protect the environment and marine life Harris and her campaign have either declined to comment or changed her stance on the latest progressive issue,” the report stated.
“Plastic straws have been banned in many parts of the country amid growing concerns about plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways.
When reached for comment, the Harris campaign said: “She does not support a ban on plastic straws.”
“She cast the decisive vote on the most important legislation in history to combat climate change and create clean energy jobs, and as president, she will focus on expanding that progress,” the statement added. “She joked about paper straws at the time. How lame, need to come up with better eco-friendly alternatives.”
The revelation comes a week after she reversed previous calls to ban fracking.
“There's no question that I'm in favor of banning fracking,” Harris said during the 2020 primary. “Starting from day one with what we can do around public lands. There has to be legislation. Yes. I took this in California. I have a history of researching this issue … We must acknowledge that the residual impacts of fracking are substantial in terms of impacts on community health and safety.
When Dana Bash confronts her about past comments, Harris said she never committed to banning fracking.
“I made it clear on the 2020 debate stage that I would not ban fracking. As vice president, I did not ban fracking. As president, I will not ban fracking.
