Naveen Patnaik of Biju Janata Dal is the longest-serving chief minister of Odisha. He began his term in 2000 and was eventually deposed in 2024. Under Naveen Patnaik's 24-year rule, Odisha achieved infrastructural development while meeting the needs of the state's poor. However, many people complain that the government deprives them of various schemes. Be it stipends, rations or housing schemes, the real beneficiaries are being left behind. A vivid example is Khirod Das of Ostpur village in Cuttack, who has lived in a hut for more than 50 years.
Khirod Das of Osterpur village under Umar Panchayat in Mahangarh has been living in a hut for more than fifty years. He has been surviving on the income he earns every day. He lives with his father, mother and daughter. Das earns 300 rupees a day and uses the money to treat his parents who suffer from acne. The next part of the money will be used for her daughter’s education. He has been applying to the government for a new house under the housing scheme. He said that he lived in pain all his life.
Even after informing the local Sarpanch, the Panchayat is said to have taken no decision on the matter. Herod Das has requested the new government to take over the house.
The newly formed government in Odisha recently announced the 'Subhadra Yojna' during the state assembly elections. The main objective of Subhadra Yojana is to support women from low-income families so that they can economically empower their families. Every eligible woman in Odisha will get financial assistance of Rs 50,000 under Subhadra Yojna.
