Italy seeks to reverse EU's 2035 internal combustion engine ban

(Bloomberg) — Italian officials say the European Union’s plan to ban the sale of new internal combustion engines from 2035 should be reviewed.
“The ban must be changed,” Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said on Saturday during the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio on Lake Como, Italy.
Pichetto Fratin called the EU's decision “ridiculous” and determined by an “ideological vision” and a state-controlled approach to policymaking within the bloc. He added that the plan needed to change to reflect different market realities during a slowdown in Europe's auto industry.
Industry Minister Adolf Urso also supported the change, urging the incoming European Commission to review the plan from 2026 to early 2025.
“Europe needs a pragmatic vision, but the ideological vision has failed. We need to admit that,” he added.

I don't know how many people Italy almost invented the famous automobile industry with, but they certainly played and continue to play an important role in it. The thought that they would give up on such beauty, such exquisite pursuit of perfection, has always been a nightmare perpetuated by sullen left-wing green ideologues.
Ferrari, the famous Italian carmaker, was a pioneer in rejecting the electric car mandate. Last year they publicly announced their rejection of electric vehicle mandates, and in doing so they might have spared themselves from sharing the financial pain with more gullible rivals, most of whom were blindly betting on the future financial viability of their businesses. Politicians' promises.
Besides the fact that many people don't want electric cars, there are other considerations.
There are about 250 million cars in Europe, of which about 11 million are electric cars. Even if Europe somehow convinces every owner of those 250 million cars to switch from their internal combustion vehicles to electric vehicles, that would be a lot of extra demand on a grid already struggling to maintain energy supplies during the winter.
Let us hope that the EU will succumb to necessity sooner rather than later.
