Industry appeals Gulf of Mexico court ruling, warning of major consequences for U.S. energy security

washingtonSeptember 12, 2024 — The American Petroleum Institute (API), the EnergeGeo Alliance, the National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) and Chevron U.S.A. today released the following joint statement File an appeal The U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland decided to reverse the biological opinion of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in the Gulf of Mexico. Under the ruling, the U.S. Gulf of Mexico biological opinion will expire on December 20, threaten Stop new and existing oil and gas production and events in the area.

“U.S. oil and natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico is a driver of energy security in the United States and around the world, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs and generating billions of dollars in state and local revenue. If this ruling goes uncontested , at a time of continued inflation and geopolitical instability, critical sources of America's current and future energy supply may be at risk. We intend to use all legal means to prevent this ruling from affecting Gulf Coast economies that rely on cheap, reliable energy. and had a profound impact on American families.

By withdrawing a biological opinion without giving NMFS sufficient time to issue a revised opinion, this court's ruling could significantly slow down or halt all permitting for routine day-to-day operations. This puts current and future energy production at risk and compromises worker safety and environmental protection efforts.

The ruling could lead to a rapid shutdown of all oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico. The lack of an NMFS biological opinion means that BSEE (Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement) must consult with NMFS on every permit application for every operation in the Gulf of Mexico.

Judge Biden’s patently arbitrary, capricious and malicious ruling can only be interpreted as a treasonous act that undermines U.S. energy security. It would rapidly reduce crude oil production by 1.8 million barrels per day from our energy supply. The devastating effects will be global.

As if that wasn’t treason enough…

After depleting strategic oil reserves, they will shut down 1.8 million barrels per day of production…

In this scenario, the oil and gas industry will almost certainly prevail, but severe production disruptions are likely this winter.

While the lame media continues to try to attribute record U.S. oil production to Biden, the reality is that his mismanagement has routinely flouted the law in his treasonous war on the U.S. oil and gas industry…
