Greens blame President Trump for lack of progress at COP29 – does Watt agree?

Trump focuses on global climate talks as COP29 approaches

    Paris-

The prospect of Donald Trump returning as president hangs in the balance as key UN-sponsored climate talks hang in the balance, with countries “reserving” their positions until they know who is in the White House.

Veteran observers of climate diplomacy say uncertainty about the election outcome is haunting this November's COP29 summit, which begins just six days after voters decide between Trump and Kamala Harris.

The outcome of the election is embarrassing as governments try to forge a global consensus in the coming months not only around climate but also to strengthen environmental protections and a treaty to tackle plastic pollution.

    …

Ali Mohammed, chairman of the African negotiating team, accused developed countries of being short-sighted and showing a “lack of seriousness” at the negotiating table.

“The climate change situation doesn't really care who is in charge of the United States, whether it's a Republican or a Democrat,” he told reporters.

This is interesting on so many levels.

First, would false claims about renewable energy being cheap be more effective? Renewable energy is extremely expensive – why else would countries that are already investing heavily in renewable energy be hesitant?

Interestingly, they still blame Trump — even though he hasn’t been in office since the early 2000s.

Only true believers still think the COP meeting is about the environment. COP28 was held in the oil states, and the COP28 chair was said to have spent a lot of time trying to push gas sales.

COP29 will be held in Azerbaijan, which is even more of a petrostate than the UAE. Azerbaijan is a country that has been known as a major supplier of oil and natural gas for more than a century. I wonder what their environmental priorities are?

The environmental movement is dead, except for the few who hold on to their beliefs, and their power has been broken. The world will never truly move to green energy. World leaders no longer even hide their disdain for the global environmental movement – why else would they mock green by holding major environmental conferences in petro-states?

The only question is, how will the petrostate organizers of the COP climate meeting rise above this supreme mockery of the environmental cause? Will the next climate conference be held in the middle of the Texas oil patch? On an offshore oil rig? Choosing a livelier location than Azerbaijan would be a challenge.
