When the power goes out in Arlington, Virginia, people often gather at Scott Sklar's home.

Sklar: “I've taken pictures of 30 cellphones charging on the dining room table, 18 bags of medicine in the refrigerator, and my neighbors sitting in my house on a very hot or cold night.”

That's because Sklar's home and separate office never lose power.

He uses a combination of technologies to produce clean energy – solar panels, solar roof panels, wind turbines and hydrogen fuel cells. He stores excess electricity in a set of batteries.

Sklar has been a renewable energy enthusiast since the 1970s and loves sharing his knowledge. He visited his home and office. He visits universities in a van equipped with solar, wind and battery power.

Sklar: “The kids in the neighborhood call it the 'Back to the Future Van.'”

Sklar also serves as a consultant to help companies transition to clean, resilient energy technologies.

Sklar: “Now that we're in a world where climate change is accelerating, we're seeing more outages, longer durations…Energy resilience is going to be a must.”

So he hopes to show people the many benefits of clean energy.
