CNN: Why was Hurricane Helen so severe? Fossil fuel pollution. – Excerpt: “Scientists have been warning us for decades that carbon pollution around the planet will exacerbate extreme weather events,” said Katharine Hayhoe, chief scientist at The Nature Conservancy. “But as a human being, it’s shocking to see a disaster unfold before our eyes, impacting people and places we know and love.”

CNN: 'It's not rocket science': Professor McMahon explains why hurricanes are getting stronger –
Elise Hammond, CNN
The world is getting hotter and hurricanes are getting stronger, according to climate scientists.
Hurricane Helene hit Florida as a Category 4 storm Thursday night, destroying homes, knocking out power and bringing deadly flash flooding.
“This is not rocket science, but very basic physics tells us that the warmer the ocean, the more water evaporates into the atmosphere, and the more energy is available to fuel these storms,” said leading climate scientist Michael Mann. Mann told CNN on Friday.
Stronger storms mean stronger winds, which can lead to more life-threatening storm surges and catastrophic flooding. Mann said the storm will still be dangerous after it makes landfall because the increased moisture will allow continued rainfall.
…
But Mann said there are steps we can take to prevent the situation from getting worse, including halting carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels and switching to renewable energy “as quickly as possible”.
