A radical climate protest group called Climate Rebellion backed Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday, citing their belief that she will be able to press her on energy policy.
The activist group initially declined to express support for Harris, seemingly conditional on her accepting a series of demands, including a complete moratorium on new oil and gas projects and a ban on new fossil fuel leasing on federal lands and waters. After meeting with one of Harris' top advisers in early September, the climate resistance group — which targeted Harris in one of its signature disruptive protests in 2023 — now supports her candidacy because she “is our A leader who can apply pressure and push on key energy policies.” the organization announced in a social media post on Wednesday.
“Climate Rebels is endorsing Kamala Harris for President of the United States,” the group wrote in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “Harris is not the visionary we need, but she is the leader we can apply pressure and push. A Trump presidency would be an all-out disaster for our climate, water and land. Trump will empty out [Environmental Protection Agency]repealing regulations on cars, power plants and farms. He would sell out our sacred public spaces to his billionaire cronies. it's out of the question. Destructive activist groups, often interrupt Speeches and major events protesting fossil fuels, joining the ranks of hardline eco-activist groups that have lined up to support Harris even though she no longer explicitly supports a fracking ban. Climate Rebels believes Harris is a “bandwagon politician” who could be forced to take positions she didn't want to take in the first place.
Climate Rebels “vehemently” opposes Harris' recent about-face on fracking (she previously wanted to ban it) and the Biden-Harris administration's continued shipment of weapons to Israel as it fights terror groups in Lebanon and Gaza policy. However, the group was so disgusted with former President Donald Trump – who it claimed was “influenced by racists, rapists, fascists and billionaires” – that it backed Harris.
Climate Rebellion is one of many similar-style environmental protest groups that receives funding from the Climate Emergency Fund (CEF), a US-based non-profit organization that receives funding from a number of prominent and wealthy American liberals funds. CEF’s donors include Hollywood writer Adam McKay and actor Jeremy Strong, according to the organization’s 2023 annual report.
Neither the Harris campaign nor Climate Challenge immediately responded to requests for comment.
