I've received some emails from people trying to access temperature datasets and other data from the NOAA website and getting 404 or “Access Denied” type messages.
The primary repository for this data is the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) in Asheville, North Carolina, which has experienced recent weather events (high winds, heavy rainfall, flooding) as the aftermath of Hurricane Helene moved through the region. Influence.
I received this from the admin there:
Hurricane Helen made landfall on Friday, September 27th and continued moving inland into the Blue Ridge Mountains, more specifically Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville, North Carolina is home to NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and many other NOAA services, including NODD's Data Broker, which moves various data sets from on-premises to the cloud.
The Asheville area suffered major catastrophic damage from the storm, with roads washed out and parts of the city impassable, and critical infrastructure such as power, internet and cell phone service paralyzed.
This impacts our ability to deliver data to the cloud and ultimately to our customers. Networks and power are critical to our ability to run the necessary infrastructure to move data. Once restored, we will work to restore our sources. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.
Thanks,
