Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Vance successfully turned the tables on “climate change” during Tuesday night's vice presidential debate, as moderators tried to bring up the left-wing topic in a way they might have done to former President Donald Trump. “Now let's look at Hurricane Helene. This storm has the potential to be one of the deadliest storms ever recorded,” host Norah O'Donnell quoted scientists as saying. “Climate change is making these storms more dangerous due to historic rainfall amounts.” Hurricanes are getting bigger, stronger, and more deadly.
She then cited a CBS News poll that found that 7 in 10 Americans “and more than 60% of Republicans under 45 support U.S. efforts to reduce climate change.”
“Senator, what is the Trump administration's responsibility in trying to reduce the impacts of climate change?” O'Donnell asked.
Vance began by speaking of the victims of the “incredible, indescribable” tragedy and praying for them.
“I promise that when Donald Trump becomes president again, when disaster strikes the citizens of this country, our government will put them first,” He agreed.
But then, rather than challenge the question's flawed premise, Vance took a different approach.
“I think, first of all, it's important for Donald Trump and I to support clean air, clean water. We want the environment to be cleaner and safer. But one thing I noticed What some of our Democratic friends often talk about is concern about carbon emissions, this idea that carbon emissions cause all climate change,“Vance said.
“But we're just saying it's true for the sake of argument,” he said, noting that if Democratic policies believe this is true, their policies will make things worse.
“Well, if you believed this, what would you…want to do? The answer is, you want to bring as much manufacturing back to the United States as possible, and you want to produce as much energy as possible in the United States of America because we are the cleanest economy in the world. he said.
Indeed.
Research shows that reshoring U.S. manufacturing could reduce carbon emissions. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) ranks the United States as one of the cleanest countries on earth.
Vance then flipped the question, blaming it squarely on Democrats.
“Kamala Harris’ policies have actually led to more energy production in China, more overseas manufacturing, and more business in some of the dirtiest parts of the world. When I say that, I'm talking about their carbon emissions per unit of economic output,” he said.
“So if we really care about getting cleaner air and cleaner water, The best way is to double down on investing in American workers and the American people,Vance added. “Unfortunately, Kamala Harris did the exact opposite.”
In his rebuttal, Vance reiterated this point: If Democrats and Harris truly believe what they say about climate change, they will bring more manufacturing and more energy production to the United States
“And that's not what they're doing. It’s clear that Kamala Harris herself doesn’t believe what she’s saying in this regard. If she did, she would actually agree with Donald Trump's energy policies,“Vance concluded.
Notably, a CBS poll conducted after the debate showed Vance beating Walz in the debate.
