Data released by the Biden-Harris administration on Oct. 17 shows that a push to electrify everything will increase costs for American households, contradicting one of the White House's favorite selling points for the green agenda, experts told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The Biden-Harris administration has made cracking down on residential fossil fuel consumption a key aspect of its environmental strategy, justifying the measure in part on the grounds that electrification will lower energy costs. Now, Oct. 17 Department of Energy (DOE) residential energy price data shows that electricity will be roughly four times more expensive than natural gas by 2024, and experts tell DCNF that the White House push for electrification is one of the daily toll of extremist climate policies. Example Americans. (Related: Forget the stove! The Biden administration is working overtime to phase out all gas appliances)
“The Department of Energy has consistently stated that natural gas is a much cheaper energy source than electricity for households,” Daren Bakst, director of the Center for Energy and the Environment at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, told DCNF. “Government policies that seek to discourage natural gas use in favor of electricity will significantly drive up prices, making home heating and appliance use unnecessarily expensive. The poor will be hurt the most because they spend more of their household income than higher-income households. A large portion is used to meet basic needs, such as heating in the winter.

The Biden-Harris Department of Energy issued a series of rules restricting the use of gas appliances, including issuing revised furnace standards in September 2023 that would ban gas furnaces in 40-60% of households and increase energy efficiency requirements for water heaters . It is said to save American consumers $11.4 billion in energy and water bills each year.
Figures from Oct. 17 show electricity is significantly more expensive than fossil fuels, at $47.36 per million British thermal units (BTU), while natural gas and propane each cost $13.38 per million BTU. and $33.59. So, according to the Biden-Harris administration's own data, utility costs could increase by more than 3.5 times by switching from gas-fired appliances to electric appliances, in addition to increased installation costs.
Executive Director O.H. Skinner said: “One of the most aggressive bait-and-switch moves by officials in Washington, D.C. and coastal enclaves is to force everyone everywhere to use appliances, even though natural gas is often very cheap. .” A member of Consumers Union and a former deputy attorney general of Arizona told DCNF. “Officials argue that banning gas stoves, stoves or other gas appliances will save energy costs, but at the same time they have evidence that natural gas is cheaper… It's time for officials in Washington, D.C., to stop trying to micromanage people's lives and let Everyone takes a one-size-fits-all approach to their home.
Energy industry expert Robert Bryce accused the Biden-Harris administration of deliberately delaying the release of price data on October 3, arguing that since at least 2011, the Energy Department has not released price data later than August. At the time — two weeks before the data was released — he predicted that the agency was dragging its feet because the cost data would reflect the high cost of electricity relative to fossil fuels, which turned out to be accurate.
“This electrification push is a classic example of climate extremism,” Baxter told DCNF. “Little thought has been given to how these policies will harm Americans and poor people.”
An “Electrification Summit” hosted by the White House in December 2022 included the NGO Rewiring America, which has previously stated that its goal is to “electrify everything.”
The U.S. Department of Energy did not respond to a request for comment.
