One-third of young people do not have or do not want to have children, according to a poll conducted by the Independence Center and Newsweek. [emphasis, links added]

The survey found that 30% of Generation Z (people born between 1997 and 2012) and Millennials (people born between 1981 and 1996) Don't have or want to have any children.

The results were announced in April by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) The birth rate in the United States has dropped to an all-time low.

By comparison, 62% of respondents said they had children or wanted to have children, the report showed. Nine percent said they were unsure.

The survey also explored whether the “American Dream” is just a dream for young people.

Newsweek writes that 23% of young people think having children is “irresponsible for climate reasons.” 60% disagreed and 17% were unsure.

Pew Research Center data for 2023 echo this sentimentrevealed More than half of Democrats (55%) believe the trend of having fewer children has a “positive impact” on the environment.

Additional Pew Research Center findings for June 2024 19% of Biden voters believe that “society would be better if people prioritized marriage and having children.” compared to 59% of former President Donald Trump supporters and 39% of registered voters.

Interestingly, a Gallup survey last year found that Americans’ preference for large families (with three or more children) reaches highest share since 1971a new Gallup survey finds.

Some good news: Americans' desire for larger families has reached a 50-year high, according to a Gallup survey.

That investigation found Adults under 30 are “significantly less likely to have children” than older respondents. However, 63% said they would like to have children one day.

“Young people are more likely than older groups to think having three or more children is ideal,” Gallup analyzed.

“therefore, The greater risk that falling birth rates will cause the U.S. population to shrink may stem from young people waiting longer than previous generations to start having children, rather than from an outright decline in the desire to have children.“
