California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) called a special legislative session to “confront” President-elect Trump on Thursday following his landslide election victory over Kamala Harris. [emphasis, links added]
The special session will begin on December 2.
Gov. Newsom says Trump poses threat to California's climate change plans based on actions he took in first termillegal immigrant population, women’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights.
“California is ready to fight,” Newsom said. “I have just convened an emergency special session to help bolster our legal resources and protect our country from any unlawful actions by the incoming Trump Administration.“
“Whether it's our fundamental civil rights, reproductive freedoms, or climate action, we refuse to turn back the clock and allow our values and laws to be attacked,” Newsom added.
“Special session responds to public statements and recommendations from President-elect Trump and his advisersand actions taken during his first term – an agenda that threatens to erode fundamental freedoms and individual rights, including women’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights.
“The special session allows for expedited action to best protect California and its values from attacks. The special session will begin when the Legislature convenes on December 2,” Newsom's office said.
“The governor outlined several urgent priorities that need to be defended this special session by strengthening legal defenses against federal actions. Governor's Proclamation Calls for Legislation to Provide Additional Resources to California Department of Justice and other state entities to pursue robust affirmative action lawsuits against any unlawful conduct by the incoming Trump administration, and Defend against federal lawsuits seeking to undermine California laws and policies. The funding will support the following capabilities: Immediately file suit and seek injunctive relief against unlawful federal conduct.” Newsom's office added.
California's far-left radical Attorney General Rob Bonta also said he was ready to stand up to President Trump.
“No matter what the incoming administration plans to do, California will move forward,” he said. “We've been through this before, and we stand ready to defend your rights and protect California's values. We are working closely with the Governor and Legislature to strengthen our defenses and Making sure we have the resources we need to fight every fight.“
