Laura Helmuth resigned as editor-in-chief of Scientific American on Thursday following her viral tirade against President-elect Donald Trump. He called his supporters “fascists” and “bigots” after his landslide election victory last week. [emphasis, links added]
Scientific American is the oldest magazine in the United States, founded in 1845.
Helmuth announced her resignation in a post on the left-wing social media platform Bluesky. She wrote:
“After 4.5 exciting years as editor-in-chief, I have decided to leave Scientific American. I will take some time to think about what comes next (and go birding), but for now I want to share that I have been proud to support A small sample of the work.

Before quitting smoking, The now-former editor faced widespread calls to resign over his hate-filled tirades.
“Every four years, I remember why I left Indiana (where I grew up) and remember why I respect those who stay and work to be less racist and sexist. The moral arc of the universe will not be Itself,” Helmuth posted on Bluesky after the election.
She continued her tirade in another post, writing: “Solidarity with all The meanest, stupidest, most paranoid high school classmates are celebrating early grades because they went to the fucking moon and back.
Another article read, “I apologize to young voters, my generation X is full of f**king fascists.”

According to the Daily Mail, the magazine had not endorsed a presidential candidate before Helmuth took over as editor. It endorsed Joe Biden in 2020 and then Kamala Harris in 2024.
Helmuth deleted her anti-Trump election posts and apologized, saying: “I made a series of offensive and inappropriate posts on my personal Blue Sky account on election night and I'm sorry.”
