We're excited to join Dr. Roger Pielke Jr. (UC Boulder) and Chris Wright, CEO and Chairman of Liberty Energy, for a live discussion on Wednesday in Denver as part of Liberty Energy's “Freedom and Energy” presentation series part. Roger is a professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder and the author of the “Honest Broker” substack (link here). Roger's work focuses on the intersection of policy and governance issues related to science, technology, environment, innovation and sport. It was exciting to see the Denver area community come together and have a live studio audience to discuss the current state of climate, energy and the environment broadly.
To kick off the discussion, Roger walked us through a presentation on key background on the current state of energy and climate science (slides linked here). We then dive into how the wider population can get better data and discussions about energy and climate, the issues the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) summarizes for policymakers, and how the environmental community’s priorities are shifting to major concerns climate, the impact of climate alarmism on children and young people, and how Roger teaches his students about the scale and complexity of energy and power in the world. Roger shared examples of the “war on situations” taking place, his experience being investigated by Congress, and the overwhelming need for reliable climate data from a trusted, authoritative organization that can be discussed publicly.
We also discuss the role of oil and gas companies in the future energy world, the calculations for reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, the urgent need for more energy in developing countries, the great opportunity for the United States to help power the world, and conclusion Some inside scoop on Roger's chances of joining the Prime coaching staff. As you will hear, Roger is a great explainer and a great thinker. We are so grateful to the Liberty team for letting us be a part of it. The world needs more “freedom and energy” town hall gatherings!
As you'll hear, Roger spoke very positively of the IPCC's podcast with Michael Liebreich and Jim Skea (the new head). The episode is linked here.
As we head into the weekend, we wish you all the best and hope your team wins! If you do go out for a walk or have some other time, we'd love for you to listen to this special edition of COBT. We learned a lot!
The event will be archived in WUWT Climate TV, a collection of more than six hundred videos featuring new interviews and analysis from dozens of media sources discussing, debating and analyzing climate science, climate politics and energy policy.
