The COP29 fun has begun!
For years, successive COPs have papered over these rifts, but they have now become unbridgeable chasms.
The West wants the world to abandon fossil fuels. Developing countries want money, and many Western countries cannot afford it.
Meanwhile, China and other countries in Asia want a free pass to cut emissions and pay for it. Major oil-producing countries are saying “Get on your bike!”
In Baku, the West has so far pledged $250 billion in annual climate aid until 2035. But taking inflation into account, that's just a little more than the $100 billion agreed in Copenhagen in 2008.
China still refuses to pay a cent, while Azerbaijan has made it clear it will not give up its God-given gift of oil and gas.
As for reducing emissions, the whole idea has to give way to this anachronistic scramble for money.
At the same time, everyone knows the whole thing is a scam, because not only will Trump withdraw from the Paris Agreement next year, he will take his money with him.
Of course, the whole thing is hilarious. All we need now is Ed Miliband trying his bacon butt again!
