The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) makes no secret that its sole goal is to promote renewable energy. It is an intergovernmental organization with 169 member states as well as the European Union.
One of its main tools is to convince governments and the public that renewable energy is much cheaper than fossil fuels. They created a dashboard on onshore wind costs:
The UK cost is said to be US$0.0314/kWh, equivalent to £25.12/MWh. However, the clearing price for onshore wind in this year’s CfD auction was £50.90/MWh (at 2012 prices), rising to £69.91 (at 2023 prices):
Clearly, IRENA’s fees were not only fake, they were fraudulent. If the UK's costings are wrong, there is no doubt that other countries' costings are wrong too.
Levelized costs (LCOE) are meaningless anyway because they do not include all indirect costs associated with intermittency.
It is worth noting that the BEIS levelized cost calculations released last year also set an unrealistically low cost for onshore wind, although not as fanciful as IRENA.
