The Nation recently published a post titled “Climate Change is a Real National Security Threat,” claiming that climate change is the reason hurricanes Helen and Milton have caused such devastation and is the number one national security threat facing the United States. This is nonsense. [emphasis, links added]

Not only is there no evidence to support the idea that climate change is “exacerbating” hurricanes, But contrary to the claims of The Nation, Mass migration and unrest are not caused by climate change either.

The Nation begins by describing the usual threat assessment report submitted to Congress by the Director of National Intelligence (DNI).

The report covers a range of international threats, such as our overseas enemies, international conflicts, etc., but The Nation highlights and amplifies the parts of the report that identify climate change as a threat.

    The National wrote:

“…In the section on “Transnational Issues,” we are told that climate change also poses risks to U.S. security by triggering mass migration and unrest abroad. Yet ignored in the Director of National Intelligence’s warning is the threat climate change poses to our nation—our lives, communities, and critical infrastructure.

“Now, in the wake of hurricanes Helen and Milton, this oversight should be considered one of the greatest intelligence failures in the nation's history.”

The Nation claims, “While we ostensibly spend trillions of dollars to protect our country and our allies from hostile nations, we are failing to protect ourselves or others from the destructive forces of climate change. Almost no action was taken.

This statement is ironic given that federal, state, and local governments have spent trillions of dollars over the past few decades on green energy, climate-related subsidies, and implementing and enforcing climate restrictions.

This fact is easily ignored by The Nation and the many climate fraudsters who keep demanding more money and power.

This is a particularly ridiculous amount of money because There is no evidence that the money spent or the restrictions imposed on people’s freedoms have had or will have any impact on climate change; Or, based on impacts to date, climate change is a problem that requires government action to prevent.

For example, the Director of National Intelligence report claims that climate change is causing mass migration and unrest overseas. This is wrong.

Despite alarmist claims that some countries will be displaced by rising sea levels, so-called “climate refugees” have not emerged during more than a hundred years of global warming.

As discussed in Climate Overview: Climate Refugees, nearly all countries typically listed as at risk from crop failures have actually seen increases in crop production during this so-called dangerous period.

Data shows that deaths from climate and weather-related disasters have actually declined over the past few decades. (see picture below)

Figure 1: Source: Nima Yaghmaei et al., The Human Cost of Disasters: An Overview of the Past 20 Years (2000-2019), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and Center for Disaster Epidemiology Research, 13 October 2020.

Bad weather can cause riots, But that doesn’t mean climate change is the cause of severe weather or weather-related disturbances abroad.

As discussed in more than 70 posts on Climate Realism discussing similar claims, in countries where large-scale migration has occurred in recent years, the phenomenon is caused by war, civil strife, political unrest and factors unrelated to changing climate conditions Economic conditions driven, in the form of: long-term trends in deteriorating weather or agricultural or economic decline.

State claims that hurricanes Helen and Milton have become more destructive due to climate change are similarly lacking any basis in scientific fact or data.

    The magazine wrote:

“[t]“The destructive power of Helen and Milton is greatly amplified by the effects of climate change” as human emissions of greenhouse gases cause water temperatures to rise, creating “the energy to transform ordinary hurricanes into superstorms like Helen and Milton.”

This is wrong. climate realism Similar claims made by various mainstream media outlets that climate change caused or contributed to hurricanes Helen and Milton have been debunked in multiple posts, such as here , here , here , and here .

While warm water does lead to hurricanes forming, this has always been the case. However, It is known that much of this year's warming is caused by natural El Niño events in the Pacific.

Remarkably, while other media outlets (such as the typically alarmist BBC) acknowledged this fact, The Nation ignored it. Warm water is a necessary but not sufficient condition for hurricane strength and formation.

in the most recent climate realism Post here, South China Morning Post Admit, except for warm waters, Factors such as wind shear and favorable regional circulation patterns can help or prevent cyclones from forming.

The data shows that hurricanes are not becoming more extreme, as they were during the last century's mild warming. Climate realism. This fact is supported by hurricane records, which have even been reported by media outlets such as CBS.

Weather resilience deserves planning and funding and is critical to national security, but it is not what the country requires.

Their calls for social reorganization are based on a false premise: Current and future weather can and needs to be changed through human effort, otherwise, the magazine suggests, U.S. national security will be at risk. No one should be fooled by this lie.

The United States does face multiple national security threats; climate change is not one of them, let alone the most important security threat facing the country.

Quite simply, in the words of President-elect Trump describing climate change itself, the idea that climate change poses a threat to U.S. national security is “a hoax.”
