Readers of Legal Insurrection may remember September’s historic Polaris Dawn space mission.
The mission included several history-making moments. Polaris Dawn's private astronauts conducted the world's first commercial spacewalk on the third day of a five-day journey into Earth's orbit. The team also tested an advanced extravehicular space suit that could be a prototype for future interstellar travel.
The mission was led and funded by billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, who performed the spacewalk.
President-elect Donald Trump appointed Isaacman to lead the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Isaacman, CEO of payments processing company Shift4 Payments and a close associate of SpaceX founder Elon Musk, would bring an outsider's perspective to the space agency and its $25 billion budget if approved by the Senate.
“Jared will advance NASA's mission of discovery and inspiration, paving the way for groundbreaking achievements in space science, technology and exploration,” Trump said in a post on his “Truth Social” platform.
One of the key questions facing the next NASA administrator is how to get NASA's core Artemis program back on track to send NASA astronauts to the moon. The first astronaut landing will take place during the Artemis III mission, currently planned for late 2026.
Space exploration enthusiasts are excited about this option.
