According to reports, Canadian startup Deep Sky has received funding from venture capital firm Breakthrough Energy Catalyst to build its Deep Sky Alpha project – the world's first direct air capture carbon removal project. canadian news agency.
Once completed, the project will remove excess carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere to combat “climate change” – unlike carbon capture and storage, which captures CO2 from smokestacks.
December 7, 2023 Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said her cabinet is committed to attracting investment and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
“As early as 2007, we took responsibility by setting a carbon price, Develop a carbon offset and trade program, invest billions of dollars in commercial-scale carbon capture utilization and storage, and create an innovation fund that has provided grants worth $2.6 billion to more than 260 emissions reduction projects to date, ” she said at the time.
Breakthrough Energy Catalyst funds commercial projects focused on climate technologies. Wednesday's announcement marks their first investment in Canada.
Breakthrough Energy Catalyst principal Mario Fernandez said commercializing direct air capture technology at lower cost and scale provides a unique opportunity.
“The world will eventually need multiple methods of carbon removal at prices well below what is currently achievable, but Deep Sky’s platform will enable and accelerate real-world innovation that is affordable [direct air capture] It can be done,” Fernandez said.
March 13, Saskatchewan's rural towns and territorial governments vote overwhelmingly (95 per cent) to recognize carbon dioxide is not a pollutant Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) Convention.
The resolution passed calls on Premier Scott Moe to remove the province from all national and international net zero agreements.
United Conservative Party representatives passed a similar non-binding resolution last month stating Carbon dioxide is “the fundamental nutrient for all life on Earth.”
“The carbon cycle is essential for living things. Carbon dioxide concentrations are currently around 420 ppm, close to their lowest levels in more than 1,000 years. estimate CO2 levels need to be above 150 ppm to ensure plant survival,” it read.
“The planet needs more carbon dioxide to sustain life and increase plant production, both of which will contribute to the health and prosperity of all Albertans.”
Premier Smith earlier praised the province's emissions reduction efforts as an “effective Alberta-made plan” that is consistent with natural resource development.
“Deep Space” being built in the town of Innisfail will extract carbon dioxide directly from the air, said to be able to clean up “historic emissions” and reverse “climate change”.
Deep Sky said it will pilot up to 14 direct air capture projects from companies around the world to see which ones can be commercialized.
The captured carbon dioxide will then be transported to the Meadowbrook Carbon Storage Center facility north of Edmonton and stored two kilometers underground.
Deep Sky plans to have its Alpha project fully operational by next spring.
