Sunny and cold weather is expected in the Baltimore area during the week leading up to Christmas and Hanukkah, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures near BWI Marshall Airport dropped below freezing over the weekend, with a high of 31 degrees expected on Sunday and an overnight low of 16 degrees. Winter shelters in Baltimore City and County have been activated for at least part of this week.
Sunday is expected to be sunny and calm. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly above freezing again on Monday, with a high near 35 degrees and sunny skies.
The weather service predicts there will be a slight chance of snowfall starting at 1 a.m. Tuesday, when temperatures will fall back to the low 30s. As the day progresses, the chance of snow is expected to increase to 30 percent around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Tuesday is expected to be mostly cloudy, with an overnight high near 46 degrees and a low of 33 degrees.
Wednesday, which is Christmas Day, is expected to be sunny with a high of nearly 44 degrees.
Conditions are expected to be about the same Thursday, with partly sunny skies and a high near 45 degrees, while the overnight low is 34 degrees.
Friday is expected to be cloudy, with a high near 48 degrees.
Baltimore City activated winter shelters on Christmas Eve morning. Many warming shelters will be open during the day, and Baltimore residents seeking overnight shelter can contact the city's shelter hotline at 443-984-9540.
Baltimore County's winterization shelters — the Eastern Family Resource Center at 9150 Franklin Square Drive in Rosedale and the Community Health Center at 1811 Woodlawn Drive in Woodlawn — have also been activated for the season. Homeless residents can call 410-887-8463 to speak with a security officer about a shelter bed.
