Excerpt from United Nations Organization: The Brazilian government, the United Nations and UNESCO are joining forces to strengthen research and measures to combat disinformation campaigns that delay and undermine climate action.

“We must also combat climate disinformation. The United Nations, together with Brazil and UNESCO, is launching the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change. We will work with researchers and partners to step up action against climate disinformation. ——United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

The Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change aims to strengthen support for urgent climate action at a time when scientists warn the world is running out of time.

Announced at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024, the initiative is a dedicated multilateral cooperation between countries and international organizations to fund research and actions that promote the integrity of information on climate issues.

“The initiative will bring together a network of countries, international organizations and researchers to support joint efforts to combat disinformation and promote action in preparation for COP30 in Brazil.” ——Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

The project aims to expand the scope and breadth of research on climate disinformation and its impacts, gathering evidence from around the world to inform and support strategic action, advocacy and communications.

The initiative echoes the commitments made by UN Member States in the Global Digital Compact adopted at the Future Summit in September 2024, which encourages UN entities to work with governments and relevant stakeholders to assess the spread of misinformation and disinformation. Impact on achieving sustainable development goals.

“Through this initiative, we will support journalists and researchers investigating climate issues, sometimes at great risk themselves, and combat rampant climate-related disinformation on social media.” ——Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO

As part of the initiative, a global fund will be created to fund online, in-depth research that will help expose and dispel disinformation related to climate change and socialize research findings. The fund will be managed and implemented by UNESCO and will adopt a multi-partner trust fund structure.

The initiative will support and strengthen existing climate change communication campaigns to mitigate and combat climate disinformation, particularly ahead of the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held in Brazil in November 2025 .

Countries joining the initiative include United Nations member states (Chile, Denmark, France, Morocco, Sweden and the United Kingdom have confirmed their participation), United Nations entities (UN Climate Change, World Meteorological Organization), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Civil society representatives.

    …

    “Climate proven”

One of the key ongoing efforts to combat climate disinformation is Climate Verified, a joint initiative of the United Nations and social impact agency Purpose that promotes solution-focused, science-based messaging to debunk myths and end narrative denial ism, doomsdayism and procrastination.

Originally launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Verified is a global communications infrastructure designed to address the most pressing and emerging errors and disinformation challenges around the world.

Climate Validation is based on a three-pillar approach: trusted messengers and community engagement to engage and persuade grassroots audiences; global creative campaigns to engage the entire target audience and make the issue visible; and sessions focused on climate communication expert insights, leveraging solutions The program encourages global collaboration.
