Maryland is in preparation mode ahead of Monday's blizzard that could bring 4 to 6 inches of snow to the Baltimore area.
Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of preparedness Saturday to increase the state's ability to effectively respond to potential weather disasters.
A news release from the governor said snow accumulation and freezing temperatures will likely have the biggest impact on traffic across the state.
“Ice roads are expected and any unavoidable travel should be done with extreme caution,” the release reads.
Snow is expected to begin falling in the Baltimore area after 2 a.m. Monday, with 2 to 4 inches of snowfall, according to the National Weather Service.
Rainfall amounts are expected to increase between 3 and 5 inches throughout the day Monday, with snow mixed with freezing rain expected before 4 p.m.
The chance of snow is expected to remain high Monday night until around 7pm, with any potential freezing rain expected to turn to snow after 7pm as the snow is expected to taper off after that.
Ahead of the snowfall Sunday night, the Baltimore area is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 33 degrees and winds of 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
The low temperature on Sunday is expected to be 25 degrees.
The high temperature is expected to be 29 degrees on Monday, with a 100 per cent chance of precipitation.
Veobia Akilo, interim director of the Baltimore Department of Transportation, said the city began treating roads with salt water late Thursday night ahead of the snowfall and would do so again ahead of Sunday's expected snowstorm. The city's winter shelters remain open until Tuesday.
The city's health department has issued a “blue extreme cold alert” from Saturday through Tuesday, which means there is an increased risk of cold-related injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia. People seeking asylum can call the city's asylum hotline at 443-984-9540.
