To get more people to buy electric vehicles, the United States needs more public electric vehicle chargers, and those chargers must be reliable.
Terry: “One of the issues that drivers may face is that they may go to a station that the mobile app or the car tells them to go to, but when they get to the station, that station may not be working.”
Kameale Terry is the co-founder of ChargerHelp, a company dedicated to improving the reliability of electric vehicle chargers.
Sometimes chargers get vandalized or have hardware damage, she said.
But many times, charging problems are blamed on electronics. The charger, its payment platform, the vehicle, and the mobile app that locates the charger all need to communicate with each other.
Software updates or errors may cause communication interruptions.
Terry: “So that's what you really get, 'Oh, the station should be working, but it's not working.'” … Most of the time, it really just comes down to software.
She said these are solvable problems, so her company is helping to build a team of technicians trained to diagnose and fix a range of charging issues.
As a result, they are helping to create a more reliable electric vehicle charging network, which can help increase people's confidence in electric vehicles.
