    Markey Green's New Deal
Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., claimed that the Los Angeles fires were the result of a climate change “catastrophe” caused by President-elect Donald Trump's embrace of “Big Oil,” resulting in “more deaths.” [emphasis, links added]

“Trump has been bought by Big Oil for $1 billion. Just pay for killing the IRA and the Green New Deal. We know what's coming. More fires, more climate disaster, more deaths. The LA fires are A preview of the atrocities to come,” Markey wrote on X on Saturday:

Trump was bought by oil giants for $1 billion. Just payback for killing the IRA and the Green New Deal. We know what to expect. More fires, more climate disasters, more deaths. The Los Angeles fires were a preview of the atrocities to come.

In another post on Friday, the left-wing senator said Trump's expression of support for more natural gas drilling was “adding fuel to the fire”:

Los Angeles is on fire. Donald Trump says to do baby drills and stop wind and solar power. He will add fuel to the fire.

    — Ed Markey (@SenMarkey) January 10, 2025

When multiple fires broke out across thousands of acres in Los Angeles, Markey has been critical of Republicans for not supporting the Green New Deal:

Republicans say we can’t afford a Green New Deal. What we truly cannot afford is to lose our lives, homes and communities to the fires caused by the climate crisis. What we need is institutional change, not climate change. https://t.co/i3JEN41ibb

“Republicans say we can't afford a Green New Deal,” he wrote in another social media post. “What we truly cannot afford is to lose our lives, homes and communities to the fires caused by the climate crisis. What we need is institutional change, not climate change.

Markey, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 20 years and was elected as the state's junior senator in 2013, co-sponsored the Green New Deal in 2019 with New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D). to achieve a Green New Deal. Transitioning the country to zero-emission energy failed to advance in the Senate.

Markey cited climate change as the cause of the ongoing fires — which have claimed at least 16 lives and destroyed thousands of homes since the first blaze broke out in Pacific Palisades on Tuesday. Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Chief Kristin Crowley admits city officials “failed” to provide her agency with the resources it needs:

The president-elect has warned about mismanagement of wildfires in California for years, including as recently as September 2024, according to Breitbart News.

Trump has since called on Newsom to resign, saying it was “all his fault!”:
