Within hours of being sworn in to the White House, President Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the Paris Agreement for the second time. [emphasis, links added]
“I immediately quit the unfair behavior, [one-sided] The Paris Climate Agreement Scam. The United States will not destroy its own industries, but China pollutes with impunity,” Trump said.
at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Trump signed a number of executive orders, one of which was to withdraw the United States from the United Nations Paris Climate Agreement.
Trump withdrew the United States from the deal during his first term in 2020, but it took years to finalize it. Former President Joe Biden rejoined the agreement shortly after.
The international climate agreement launched in 2015 aims to set a goal of limiting global warming to less than 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels.
Trump signed a letter notifying the United Nations of the U.S. withdrawal from the treaty.
“In recent years, the United States has claimed to have joined international agreements and initiatives, does not reflect our nation’s values or our contribution to the pursuit of economic and environmental goals,” the executive order reads.
“and, These agreements direct U.S. taxpayer dollars to countries that do not need or deserve financial assistance for the benefit of the American people”.
