President Teddy Roosevelt left a wide environmental legacy, from the creation of the U.S. Department of Forest Services to the conservation of the Grand Canyon.
Now, Roosevelt’s Presidential Library is being built in North Dakota and honors the Republican president with a climate-friendly design feature.
Jenn Carroll is the Sustainability Manager for the Library.
Carroll: “Since TR’s history is to protect the president, we feel that continuing the legacy is very important to our mission.”
Local grass planted on the roof will help isolate the building. Geothermal wells will provide low energy heating and cooling. Solar panels will generate electricity from the library. The water will be filtered and reused for toilets and irrigation.
The library will open next year and plans to teach visitors these sustainable design features and Roosevelt’s environmental heritage.
Carroll: “Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library will be a cultural institution where visitors can call up, not just learn from TR, but learn from TR while being inspired to return home and take action. … Now is Times allow us to embody TR's legacy and think boldly like him, dare to live with deep concern and enthusiasm.”
