It's frightening and stressful to be told that your home is on a fast moving wildfire path that you need to evacuate.
Some people may be tempted to stay and hope that things won’t be too bad or that they will be able to defend their home.
Stumpf: “I understand. I sympathize with people who are afraid they might lose.”
But, fire chief Rob Stumpf of Lyon, Colorado, said it was important to follow evacuation orders and get out quickly.
With the warmer climate, wildfires are becoming more intense and are spreading rapidly, so he said there is usually no time to wait and see what will happen.
When people cannot evacuate, they risk their lives and others' lives.
Stumpf: “If I had to send two firefighters EMT to try to get a person being warned again and again, it was that I couldn't wear the engine for structural protection to keep two firefighters nearby houses burning or putting On the line of fire. It definitely gets rid of what we are trying to do. …I know it's a painful decision, but the best action is when and when someone with training and expertise tells you that you shouldn't be there, You should listen to them and you should evacuate.”
